Columbia County: Storm Elsa Update and Closings


Columbia County, Fla., – Columbia County officials took part in the 6:00 p.m. conference call update with the National Hurricane Center. Rainfall in Columbia County is now estimated to be between 4 to 6 inches during the storm.

Tropical storm force winds (55-60 mph) are expected between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Wednesday morning. Some areas may experience locally heavier amounts. We urge Columbia County residents to stay posted for updates and ensure you are prepared. Specific topic updates listed below.

Citizens Information Center (CIC) – The CIC is now open. Please call 386.719.7530 for Storm Elsa information.

Columbia County Board of County Commissioners – Normal County office operations have been suspended due to Tropical Storm Elsa. County employees are serving in their respective dual roles at shelter operations, emergency center operations, public works, and damage assessment. Office buildings are closed Wednesday, July 7.

Garbage Pick-up – Garbage pick-up will commence when storm-winds are below 30 mph. If citizen’s garbage is not picked up tomorrow, it will be picked up on Thursday.

Sandbags – Columbia County will distribute sandbags today, July 6, from 12:00 noon until 9:00 p.m. There is a fifteen (15) bags per vehicle limit. The sandbags are self-serve; however, elderly assistance is available at each distribution site. Sandbag distribution locations:

Shelters – Three shelters will be open from 8:00 p.m. this evening, July 6, until 6:00 p.m. tomorrow, July 7. Individuals with special needs will have power supply for medical devices. These shelters are SHELTER ONLY, as no food or beverages will be provided. Shelter locations are as follows:
