In an ongoing federal investigation of former State Attorney Jeff Siegmeister for alleged corruption, court documents were filed with a complaint for forfeiture, on September 30, in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Florida, to seize Siegmeister’s property in Live Oak.
They believe the property was purchased, at least in part, with funds from an alleged scheme that defrauded Leonard Whitman Thomas and his estate worth $985,000.
Siegmeister has not been formerly charged at this time but court documents indicate the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) reports suggest Florida law was violated, which led to the September 30 filing to seize his property.
The investigation was initiated in 2018 by the FBI and is ongoing.
Siegmeister was elected in 2012, to the Third Judicial Circuit as State Attorney. He suddenly resigned in December of 2019 with one year left on his second term. The Third Circuit encompasses seven counties, Columbia, Dixie, Hamilton, Lafayette, Madison, Suwannee and Taylor Counties.
