Two Arrested After Shooting Incident - bullet landed just feet away from 6 yr old in bedroom
Lake City, Fla., - On Wednesday, November 11, 2020, the Lake City Police Department responded to a call of shots fired in the area of SW Avalon Ave and SW Putnam St. Officers arriving at the scene verified that no one had been shot, but two homes were identified as struck by gunfire. The suspects were described as several young black males last seen fleeing the scene in a silver passenger car.
A responding officer nearby saw a silver passenger car run a stop sign driving away from the area at a high rate of speed. When he turned around to investigate, the vehicle evaded the officer, making several turns through the neighborhood, before abandoning the vehicle and fleeing on foot.
Officers from the Lake City Police Department located two subjects matching the description of the suspects hiding in bushes near Lake Isabella. When officers approached, they fled on foot. This resulted in a foot pursuit through the neighborhood. One suspect was apprehended shortly after, the other remained at large. With the assistance of the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol K-9 Teams, the second suspect was apprehended several blocks away.
During the course of the pursuit which twisted its way through the residential neighborhood, numerous bystanders and witnesses assisted officers by pointing out the direction the suspects had fled, providing descriptions, and one witness even identifying an area where one suspect may have hidden a firearm. This area was searched and a firearm was located.
At this time, one of the subjects apprehended, a juvenile, is being charged with Driving Without a License and Possession of Marijuana. The other subject, identified as Mr. Marquez Graves, is being charged with Possession of Cocaine and Resisting Arrest. Investigation to determine their involvement in the initial shooting incident is ongoing.
“One of the bullets which struck the home landed in the bedroom of a six-year-old child, just feet from where she was playing!” said Chief Argatha Gilmore. “We do appreciate the numerous citizens who stepped up to call us as they saw the pursuit unfold to provide information about where the suspects were running and hiding.”
